Water industry explainer

If you’ve ever wondered who supplies your water, or why your bill comes from one company while another maintains the pipes, you’re not alone. The UK water industry can be confusing.
The delivery of water and waste water services is split in two. Wholesalers source, treat and deliver water through their network, while licensed providers (suppliers) such as Business Stream provide customer services like meter reading, billing, account management and support.

As a licensed supplier, we are governed by standards set out by the regulators: the Water Industry Commission for Scotland (WICS) in Scotland and Ofwat in England. Because non-household water is a competitive market in the UK, customers are free to switch supplier and renegotiate their terms of supply.

Most businesses have just one wholesaler and one supplier, but some have different ones for their water and waste water. Shopping around to find the right supplier for your business can bring benefits in terms of cost and service.

As the UK’s most experienced business water supplier, we have been serving organisations of all sizes, across every sector since 2008.

Meeting small business needs

Whether you run a corner shop, a busy hairdressing salon or a micro-brewery, we know your time is precious. That’s why we keep it simple, with award-winning service, accurate bills and competitive pricing.

We also know that water may be a critical resource for your business. Using it efficiently can save you money, while our expert advice can help you identify or avoid common problems, like burst pipes or blocked drains. And if your business generates certain types of liquid waste, called trade effluent, we can help you navigate the regulatory requirements.

That includes increasing your water efficiency and neutrality, enhancing resilience in the face of water scarcity, delivering audits and data-driven insights and supporting your aims in water stewardship. And when it comes to infrastructure projects of all sizes, Business Stream’s in-depth project management expertise ensures seamless, compliant and efficient delivery.
