Environmental & social impact

Beyond supporting our customers and people through our vision to make a positive difference, we’re passionate about delivering environmental efficiencies and driving positive social change.

Our commitment to net zero

We’ve set an ambitious target to achieve net zero for our own operations by 2030. Since calculating our carbon footprint, we’ve reduced our emissions by 84%. We publish an annual carbon management plan every year and you can read our latest one below. In addition, as we work towards our net zero target, we’ve also partnered with climate action specialists, Ecologi, to invest in nature-based projects designed to support biodiversity.

Driving environmental improvements

As a water supplier, we know we have an important role to play in helping our customers meet their environmental ambitions. By helping organisations to use less water, we can contribute to reduced water use, lower costs and fewer carbon emissions.

We’ve developed a wide range of value-added services and solutions to drive this, including water efficiency technology and data and insights, our accredited Water Stewardship Programme and our sustainability-led propositions that allow customers to support local biodiversity projects.

Delivering social value

We believe we can play an important role in supporting our local communities. That’s why we’ve embedded community impact into our long‑term vision and partnered with leading organisations to support our goals. They include Career Ready, Powering Futures, Developing the Young Workforce and Business in the Community. Among the highlights are our Future Experts Education programme, recognised with the Community Outreach Award at the 2025 Women in Utilities Awards, and our work with BiTC to tackle in-work poverty and social mobility.

Supporting our charities

Our Charity Panel, established in 2019, supports our charity partners, who are all aligned to our environmental, wellbeing and community values.

Over the past year, colleagues have taken part in a wide range of fundraising activities—from bake sales and quizzes to the Edinburgh Marathon Festival and the Kiltwalk. We also offer a salary sacrifice scheme to make giving easier. Since 2019, we’ve raised over £40,000 – and we have ambitious plans to do even more to support our charities in the year ahead.
